They're mostly from Ovid, of course. ; )
Obviously with my weaving thing, I'm a fan of Arachne's story. I always thought her hard done by Athena. What I always found most interesting is the contrast between their tapestries. The human work of art emphasizing the chaotic, the real and the imperfect; the divine tapestry emphasizing order, abstraction and perfection. While Ovid never quite comes out and says so, I always got the sense that Archane's weaving was the better of the two from the response it provoked.
Another of my favorites is Pygmalion. It's just soooooo kinky. Actually, it's the commentary on art and the poet's own reflections on literary genres that get my attention. Plus it is so darn funny. Ovid's descriptions of the misogynst sculptor wooing his statue are great examples of bathos.
Pandora's is also an interesting tale. Again, with the divine creative act having a sense of malevolence about it. Hmmmm....
I wonder if the kiddos would tolerate Ovid's Metamorphoses at bedtime?
I recommend this translation. It may be a bit loose at times, but the language is lovely.
Hmmmm.... joined some bookish groups out there and am wondering what I'm doing. So here is a list of some of my favorite classics: Heart of Darkness, The Quiet American, Nausea, Ovid's Metamorphoses, anything by Catullus and Propertius, As You Like It, Donne's Holy Sonnets, H.D.'s Triology, the Palm at the End of the Mind, and the Faerie Queene.
Before you think I'm unbearable, what I read for general pleasure and mental anthesia is chick lit fantasy a la Kim Harrison or Laurell K. Hamilton. : )

My newest weaving bible.
I am going try something new this time around. I've put on a yellow warp, which I hope will make some nice panels for a baby blanket for a friend's brand new little girl. We'll see. Since I'm working on using a pattern, a variation of the twill weave that denim is made from), we'll see how well it turns out. I'm not very patient and don't like to follow directions.
I'll be updating with pictures soon.
Hmmm.... Why am I doing this when I hate writing about myself? Well.... I obviously need to self-aggrandize somewhere and I doubt that my audience will be all that huge.
Anyway, I've restarted weaving recently and am really enjoying it. However, in typical fashion (for me at least) I plan much more than I produce. Any other fiber addicts out there have similar experiences?
Thanks, I liked your weaving and could see the pattern quite clearly. One of the nice things about twill is... read more
